There is tremendous competitive advantage available to organizations who have people who can work with various data types and apply a range of analytics techniques to describe past events, predict future ones and prescribe decision options.
Over the past 3 weeks, 27 recent analytics graduates have reached out seeking my assistance landing a job, even though estimates are there are currently between 140,000 and 190,000 open Data Scientist positions in the US. How could these folks possibly have difficulty finding a job? They are in a sellers’ market! I would expect to see a bidding war since currently in the US, we find ourselves in a job market with 6.2 million open jobs amid 7 million unemployed.
In the simplest terms, Data Science is the transformation of Data into actionable insights. Raw data must be processed and transformed to produce information. That information is then analyzed to derive knowledge. The end goal of the exercise is for the knowledge to drive action.
In response to the critical shortage of data expertise in the existing job market, organizations will need to leverage and explore new techniques of acquiring, developing and retaining talent.
Industry experts predict that "through 2019, 90% of large organizations will have hired a Chief Data Officer (CDO); of these, only 50% will be hailed a success." - Gartner
Women represent a large, untapped talent pool that can be leveraged to address the
critical shortage of expertise in data and analytics.
